Norton Fredericks (they/he)
Born in 1990 on Tulmur (Ipswich) and now based on Kombumerri Country (Gold Coast), Norton Fredericks is an early-career interdisciplinary visual artist and workshop facilitator with Murri and European heritage. Their work is reflective, considered, and deeply researched: grounded in both materiality and a strong connection to place.
Norton’s practice lives at the intersection of art and science, using pre-industrial techniques across fibre, textiles, metals, pottery, and photography. They draw on knowledge of chemistry, sustainability, and ancient craft traditions to explore themes like environmental threat, post-naturalism, queer ecologies, and intersectional identity.
Their current work can be described as historical, archaeological, and process-driven. Often embedding environmental forces directly into the making process. Norton is particularly interested in how materials respond to geographic memory and changing conditions, creating work that feels both grounded and speculative.
And when they’re not in the studio? You'll most likely find them enjoying quiet time at home, dreaming of a world where artists are universally recognised and supported for their cultural contributions
